Surfing at Malveira da Serra: Guincho Beach and the Ocean

Gracefully nested in a beautiful valley of the Sintra mountains, the pleasant village of Malveira da Serra sits in the backdrop of the unique Guincho beach, 3 km away.

In a protected area and surrounded by mountains and dunes, Guincho is blessed all year round with consistent swells from the NorthWest, offering multiple breaks in the 800m long sandy beach, for around 350 days of surf a year. Expect glassy conditions in the morning, with frequent onshore winds in the afternoon, a delight for wind and kite surfers, who often consider Guincho a prime spot in Europe. On windier afternoons, surfers can take the world famous “Estrada do Cabo da Roca” across the mountains, and head to Praia Grande beach, deeper in the mountain range and a mere 15 minutes away.

Expect tubes from as little as 3 feet waves.

For those looking to develop their skills or initiating in this sport, there is a surf shop and school in the centre of Malveira da Serra village, offering transfers to and from the beach.
