The Blue House – Melides – Surface area : 260 m2
If you are looking for a chic hideaway with all modern comforts, the Blue House is it! Worries and stress are forgotten the minute you cross the gates of this small relaxed paradise.
Up until 2008, The Blue House was an ageing cottage in a vast 7,5ha forgotten estate with plenty of potential. Over the last years, the owners have been refurbishing the original house, adding new units and fittings, and they have created an iddylic holiday home. Each unit has been carefully decorated, mainly with local crafts, with influences of brazilian and morrocan cultures. The Blue House is located at a very special place and near magnificient beaches, but we are certain you will probably spend most of your holiday within this fascinating estate!
The Blue House consists of four units, all set around a central courtyard, affording plenty of privacy to all.
The original house, accessed via anentrance hall with a fireplace, next to an indoor dining area, seating 6. The fully equipped kitchen is also in this unit, and has access to the outdoor dining area for 10 people, under the rustic porch.
There are also a double bedroom on a mezzanine floor with a complete bathroom, and an additional small bedroom with a single bed.
The new wing, which was added to the original house in 2009, has a very large terrace facing the sunset to the West, just another perfect place to enjoy a Caipirinha or a Mojito at dusk. The living room, or “The White Cube”, as seen from the outside, has a flatscreen TV-set with international channels and a DVD player, and is the most wonderful place to be during winter nights, warming up by the fireplace. The villa has also Internet access.
Next to the living room are two bedrooms: one with a double bed, and another with two bunk beds (for four people). Each bedroom has its own en-suite bathroom.
The independent cottage, a fully refurbished unit facing the new wing, has a double bedroom with en-suite bathroom and a dressing area. There is also a very intimate terrace facing the sunrise at East. This bedroom has a flat-screen TV-set with international channels.
The open-plan lounge, a large indoor/outdoor “chill-out” area, the perfect place to enjoy a summer evening among family and friends. The area may also be screened off for cooler nights. Other amenities
include a barbecue and two outdoor solar power heated showers, over a wooden deck.
Special touches from this paradise include picking your own fruit from the organic orchard and fresh eggs and other delights brought by the housekeeper on request.
The estate is propitious for long hikes! There is much to discover, such as breathtaking seaviews, a fruit orchard, and obviously the two 4*5m swimming pools: former water tanks that were refurbished to match hygiene standards of modern swimming pools, linked together through a wooden deck.

Location
The Blue House is a 7,5 ha secluded estate within the Grândola Mountain Range, in the Alentejo Coast. The general athmosphere is a mix of casualness and understated style: this is a unique hide-out and countryside retreat within a very exclusive and hip touristic area.
The Alentejo and its historic towns, such as Grândola, have been moulded across centuries, first by the phoenicians, then the Romans, then the Moors and later from the 13th by the Catholic Reconquista, each leaving an important print on the landscape. There are traces of forts and settlements from as early as the 6th century BC. The area became quite important in the Roman times due to the culture of salt, and there are roman ruins and monuments splattered from Troia in the North to Santiago do Cacém in the South, which are worth a visit. Just to the south is the town of Sines, which is known for its geographically important port. It has a beautiful well preserved small Castle overlooking the narrow streets of the pleasent old centre. It has several small beautiful sandy beaches usually with great panoramic views of the west coast. Also to the south is Santiago do Cacém, a lovely town full of character which should also be visited. To the north is the medieval town of Alcácer do Sal; and further is Setúbal, known for its fantastic fresh fish.
Troia Peninsula, with its resort, golf course, casino, beautiful beaches, restaurants and night clubs is a 30 minute drive to the North. Across from the beautiful peninsula, Setubal and the Arrabida National Park are within easy reach via a ferry boat across the Sado Estuary, from which you can ocasionally spot dolphins and flamingos.
And of course 100 km away is Lisbon, an easy day trip, an hour’s drive along the motorway.
Comporta Beach is the longest sandy beach in Europe: over 60km of protected and unspoiled coastline in a still undiscovered area: from Troia to Sines
For lovers of nature, there are observation posts and tours in the nearby Sado Estuary,to watch the many animals about, such as flamingos and dolphins.
Beaches
Melides – Aberta Nova beach is located 8km from The Blue House, and boasts +60km of white sandy beach and protected grounds.
Commonly known as Comporta, the area is situated in the limits of the wonderful Sado Estuary Nature Reserve, which allows the region to preserve all its astonishing natural beauty. Comporta beach is the longest sandy beach in the whole of Europe, and extends from Troia Peninsula to Sines, and combines the charm of its dunes, the extensive pine tree area and the refreshing ocean.
Parking facilites are good, and being so large it is never too crowded.
Water sports
Melides is a well-known surf spot during summer months, combining consistent swells with perfect wind conditions. There are plenty of breaks to choose from, and the low-density tourism guarantees the absence of crowd. Sailing, windsurfing, canoeing and rowing are also popular activities.
Social Events
From June to September local hip beach clubs host regularly trendy night beach parties with international DJs. The special “hippy chic” atmosphere is both casual and refined in Comporta, and more relaxed in Melides.
Gastronomy and wine tasting
The region is famed for its gastronomy, with its fresh grilled fish being an inexpensive delight. Five formalwine routes have been devised in the Setubal peninsula by the ‘Rota de Vinhos’ association, combining wine tasting with sightseeing, arts and nature.
Excellent fresh fish and seafood restaurants are easy to find and inexpensive.
Golf
Troia Championship golf course is 40 km away (30 minute drive). Comporta Links and Comporta Dunes, will be available within the next year.
Getting there and around
2 hours flight from most European cities and 7 hours from New York, the Villa is reached by car from Lisbon airport in under 1h30. Faro airport is less than 2 hours away.
A car is essential.
The town of Grândola is 8 km away, where you will find supermarkets and shopping malls. Fresh products can be chosen and bought directly to local small biological producers, along most B-roads.
Please note: The house is accessed by a 1.5 km dirt road, 4×4 recommend but not essencial – low cars to be avoided.

My family and I enjoyed a wonderful stay in the blue house. We appreciated every single thing : the house is very quiet, surrounded by a large and beautiful garden. On top of that there is an amazing view on the sea. Dreamy! The decoration of the house is great : bohemian chic, every room is super cute and nice arranged. There are 2 small pools to refresh a bit in the back of the garden. The region is also amazingly beautiful : we had a crush on alentejo's beaches.. The owner that we met is extremely nice and helpful. We cannot recommend more à stay at blue house. My family and I enjoyed a wonderful stay in the blue house. This is a very special place surrounded by a huge expanse of beautiful cork trees, with a glimpse of the coast as you gaze out from the hilltops. Both houses are beautifully decorated and comfortable, with plenty of oudoor living spaces. The area is very rural and peaceful- the only noise comes from the braying of a donkey in the morning, the roosters and the clanging of sheep bells!Though quite remote, one can drive to gorgeous blue flag beaches 10- 15 ks away -our favourites were Melides, Aberta Nova and Lagoa de S. Andre( oerfect for children because of the warm, calm lagoon). Sofia, the owner, was always very helpful whenever we needed anything. This is a wonderful place that we'd love to return to. nous sommes tombés amoureux de la maison, de la région, des gens. nous sommes des fans...
