Historical context

The Lakes Manor is set in the historic part of Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was commissioned by the Mayor of Sintra in the early 20th Century and inaugurated in 1907 with the presence of H.R.H. Queen Dona Amélia de Orléans and Bragança and other personalities of the time.

The Lakes Manor has architectural elements of Art Nouveau typical from the late 19th century to early 20th century. A particular example of the style present at the Manor is its Neo-Classical Temple, referenced in many literary works. There is also a Art Deco Green House, and the Main Gate is shaped as an organic butterfly – a work of art in itself. The railing overlooking the main entrance depicts a repeating pattern of a swan. More evidence of this botanic, flora and fauna influence is seen on Tile Panels throughout the property.

The Lakes Manor gardens are mentioned in many literary works, namely “Treaty of Greatness of Gardens in Portugal“ by Helder Carita and Homen Cardoso. It is quoted as one of the best examples of a Romantic Garden in Portugal from the end of 19th century. Here, featured are the Neo-Classical Temple, the adjacent Lakes which give origin to the name of the property, and the Art Nouveau Green House.
